This is one of the best renditions of this song, in my opinion. Rascal Flatts recording of this in 2004 is what really made the song popular. It was originally written in 1994 by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is an American Country Rock band, they began in 1966 out of Long Beach, California. This song has been used as the perfect wedding song for many couples over the years.
Rhythm
This song is in the chord of C Major with 136 beats per minute. It is also written in Quadruple time which is four beats per bar. Rascal Flatts sings this song at a steady pace. It really just stays constant and doesn't really speed up or slow down. At the 2 minute 30 second mark the song picks up the pace just a little, but comes right back down to the steady pace. I would say the tempo would be Andante because of this fact.
Harmony
The song starts out with just the piano played by Jay Demarcus, then the lead vocals by Gary LeVox comes in, and finally guitar by Joe Rooney. The lead vocals are never competing with the instruments during the verses. When the chorus happens, the other two members join in with singing to harmonize with Gary. Periodically during the verses you will hear them all harmonize as well. I would call this a homophonic texture.
Timbre
This song is slower and sang with emotion. It is meant to make the listener feel love, faith, and trust in what is going on in their lives. The words God Bless The Broken Road says it all. It is a very simple song with just vocals, a piano, and a guitar. When they all sing together the sound is just amazing and pulls at your heart strings. Listening to the song makes you think of how things in your life were not going right or just confusing. Eventually things turn out okay and better. That is the faith part of this song, trusting in God that he knows what he is doing with you.
Texture
Homophonic would be the texture for this song. None of the instruments or the other vocals overpower the lead vocalist. Rascal Flatts sings the song smoothly and with emotion. The piano player and the guitar player would join in on the chorus to harmonize and add the texture to the song through voice. During the chorus it also seems that they raise the voices an octave as well.
Dynamics
Since this song is moderately quiet I would say it is mezzo-piano. At the two minute 30 second mark they do pick up the pace a little and play louder on the instruments. They finish the song back on the soft vocals and instrument tones. You will also notice that some of the words are extended with a few different vocal pitches in them.
